In Practice

Building a business while helping others build theirs.

A few things we've tried, noticed and learned while building our own business and working with others, a glimpse of how we work along the way.

Because we're building one too.

Owner-managed businesses make practical decisions every day. Spend money or do it yourself? Add another system or make better use of the one you already have? Automate the process or leave well enough alone?

Building TEH EH & CO means making many of the same decisions. We share some of that journey here, including what we considered, what we decided, what worked, and the occasional rabbit hole that probably wasn't necessary.

No big lessons at the end. Just a look at how we think and how the firm is being built.

Doing it myself was meant to be free.

I started building the website thinking AI would do most of the heavy lifting. A few prompts, a weekend or two, and I'd have a site live for next to nothing. What could go wrong?

What I didn't expect was how much judgment it still took. The tools could generate a raw draft in seconds, but behind every draft are endless decisions to be made. Was the layout actually right? Was the font size readable? Did the tone sound like me? Deciding what actually worked took far longer than generating it ever did.

What started as a nice little pet project became my weekend chaos. I'm very happy with the end result. But would I want to be behind every edit again? Probably not.

So is it really free?

Software

Before buying another system, use the one you've got.

Sometimes the answer is not more software. It is using what you already have properly.

People

The first hire changes more than the payroll.

Suddenly the process in your head needs to make sense to someone else.

AI

AI can do almost anything. That doesn't mean it should.

Where it saved time, where it created work, and where judgment still mattered.
